The “21:9” honesty check

The most popular ultrawide resolution, 3440×1440, is almost always marketed and sold as “21:9.” Do the actual division and it comes out to 43:18, or about 2.39:1 — roughly 21.5:9, not the literal 21:9 (2.33:1) ratio. The true 21:9 resolution is 2560×1080, which reduces exactly to 64:27 (2.37:1), found on cheaper single-height ultrawide panels rather than the 1440p ones. The 3440×1440 number was chosen to line up with the 2.39:1 cinema aspect ratio rather than the exact 64:27 fraction, and “21:9” stuck as the cleaner marketing shorthand.
